In the last few years (2002-2005) the
Energy Fitness Program has provided FREE Energy
lighting retrofit services with energy savings to 2,500 small businesses
in the Northern Sacramento Valley of California. With 3,435 kw savings
or 15,721,579 kwh savings that is approximately $500-$1200 a year
average savings on a typical customer’s electric bill.
The light quality, energy savings, and customer satisfaction with
our program are a high priority to us. When we first discuss lighting
options with a new customer we try to improve the quality and light
output and not just focus on energy savings. Many of the fluorescent
screw-in lights that we install match or are close to the style of
the incandescent lamps that are being replaced so that the aesthetic
look to a business is not compromised by installing just spiral or
quad compact fluorescents.
Most customers comment how much they like the improved lighting quality
as electronic strip lighting is flicker free and instant on with about
20% brighter light output than the outdated magnetic ballasted T-12
lighting. We will always try to de lamp linear fluorescent fixtures
by reducing two lamps to one with the help of a reflector.
The way that the Energy Fitness Program works.
We have enrollment coordinators who sign people up for the Energy
Fitness Program. They distribute flyers and brochures and generally
get the word out to as many businesses as possible.
We sometimes also send out a mass mailing to all the businesses in
a certain area or town a few days before our enrollment coordinators
go into a new area. This informs the community to be on the look
out for information about possible free savings offered by the Energy
Fitness Program.
The enrollment coordinator will explain the whole program to an interested
business owner and together they will walk around the business discussing
the lighting needs and areas where maximum savings can be obtained.
A work order is then prepared and an
appointment is made for when the install team will come to perform
the retrofit which is usually 2-3 weeks later. The work usually takes
approximately 2-3 hours to complete for a small business and typically
8 hours or more for a medium size business.
